In America we are so focused on built-in kitchen cabinets and having everything put away. Lately, I'm starting to see European trends floating across the pond. Farmhouse sinks and open shelving is an important trend that you will start seeing more and more. The main reason that Americans should have for embracing this is cost. If you go down to your local Home Depot and get a quote on a new kitchen, you will probably have a heart attack with respect to the cost. With most homes not having any equity, Americans will not be able to spend $50,000 - $100,000 for kitchen remodels anymore. I think the most economical way for me to remodel my kitchen is do demo it and then find open shelving pieces that can take the place of the cabinets. It looks like this can be done for a fraction of the cost and still look nice. You can find economical shelving units and tables at Target, Wal-mart and Ikea that would complete this look. Removing the tops of most tables and having a new countertop installed in it's place is not usually that big of a deal as long as the shelve can support the weight.
